Cold, rainy, poopy weather didn't bother us because we spent the morning underground in the Luray Caverns where some of the formations are estimated to be 4 million years old.
The first four photos are not of stalactites (-tites = top) and stalagmites, but of stalactites reflected in a pool of very still water.
White coloring is produced by calcium deposits, grey by manganese (and something else we can't recall) and the orange by iron.
The caverns are huge, some rooms as tall as ten stories. Note the small guide in the middle and cavern visitors on the right.
A light has been placed behind this feature and shines through the paper-thin deposit.
In the afternoon we returned to Shenandoah National Park where we spent the night in a bear den. It was very scary and there was no wi-fi.
We went for a walk in the woods.
